A drip from a gutter joint is easy to ignore. It is small, it only happens when it rains, and the gutter still seems to work. But a joint leak is often the first visible sign of something wider. This guide covers why joints drip across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands, what the drip is telling you, when resealing holds and when it doesn’t, and how a gutter cleaning visit fits in.
One thing up front: this page explains the problem and the options. Cleaning and inspection are our core service, and we flag joint faults with photos. For the repair itself, see the scope notes below and contact us to ask what we can do for your property.

What a Gutter Joint Does
Gutters come in lengths. Joints connect them, and they also connect corners, stop ends and outlets. Every joint is a place where water could escape, so each relies on a seal or a clip to keep it in.
Joints take the most strain in the system. Silt and wet debris add weight, brackets move, materials expand and contract with temperature, and seals age. How Professional Gutter Cleaning Extends the Life of Your Roofline explains what happens when water escapes, and How Clean Gutters Help Protect Your Home Throughout the Year shows what stays protected when the system holds.
Why Joints Drip
Most dripping joints come down to a few causes:
- An ageing seal: Putty, rubber or sealant dries, cracks or shrinks.
- Movement: A slipped bracket pulls the joint out of line.
- Weight: Silt and wet debris push down on the joint.
- Debris at the joint: Material catches on rough or open seams.
- Damage: A crack, a broken clip or a split from frost.
- Poor original fitting: Sections not seated or aligned properly.
Hidden Gutter Damage Is Easier to Spot in Summer explains why silt and joint faults stay invisible from the ground, and How Do You Stop Gutters From Blocking Again? A West Midlands Fix Guide explains how the same causes keep a gutter refilling.
Reading the Drip
Where and when it drips tells you something:
- A drip only in heavy rain usually means the gutter is overfilling and finding the weakest point.
- A steady drip in light rain suggests the seal itself has failed.
- A drip from the underside of the joint points to a seal or crack.
- Water running down the back, behind the gutter, is harder to see and more serious, because it soaks the fascia.
- A drip that appears after a storm often reflects a joint that was already marginal.

Cast Iron Joints
Older Birmingham houses often have cast iron. Its joints are typically bolted and sealed with putty or a rubber or mastic seal, and those seals dry out and fail over the decades. Rust can also build up at the joint, and the iron is heavy, which puts extra load on the brackets.
Why Victorian Homes in Birmingham Need a Different Gutter Cleaning Approach explains why age changes the approach. A property with original cast iron often has several joints approaching the end of their seal life at once, so one drip is often the first of several.
Plastic (uPVC) Joints
Most newer houses have plastic gutters with clip-together joints and rubber seals. They don’t rust, but they have their own faults:
- The rubber seal hardens or slips.
- A clip breaks or the joint opens under load.
- Brackets sag, leaving the joint out of line.
- Sun and frost make the plastic brittle over time.
A plastic joint that drips is often a sign of movement or damage rather than just age. If so, the fix is usually to resolve the movement first. Leaking Gutter Repair Birmingham: Fix or Replace? explains how the material changes the repair decision.
When Resealing Works
Resealing a joint tends to hold when:
- the leak is at one joint, not several
- the gutter on either side is straight and well supported
- the brackets are secure and the fall is right
- the surfaces are clean, dry and sound
- the cause was simply an ageing seal
In general terms, a seal needs clean, dry, sound surfaces to bond to. Sealing over silt or damp rarely lasts. That is one reason a gutter should be cleared first.
When It Needs More Than a Reseal
A reseal is a short-term patch when:
- several joints along a run are failing at once, as is common on old cast iron
- a bracket has slipped and keeps pulling the joint apart
- the gutter is corroded, cracked or brittle beyond the joint
- the fall is wrong, so water pools at the joint
- the fascia behind is soft, so the brackets can’t hold
In those cases, repair means resetting brackets, replacing a section, or both. Roofline Cleaning Birmingham: Gutters, Fascias & Soffits explains why gutters, fascias and soffits fail together.
The Cause Upstream
A joint that drips repeatedly is often a symptom. Common upstream causes:
- Silt weighing on the joint and making it work harder.
- A downpipe restriction that backs water up: See Downpipes Blocked Again? The Birmingham Fix Most Homeowners Miss and How Do You Know If Your Downpipe Is Blocked? Signs Birmingham Homes Show. Our downpipe unblocking service tests every outlet.
- Roof moss shedding into the channel: See Moss on Your Roof? What It’s Doing to Your Birmingham Gutters Right Now. Our roof cleaning and moss removal services treat the source.
- Plants growing in the silt, as Gutters Full of Weeds or Seeds? Birmingham Clearing Guide explains.
- Leaf fall: Leaves in Gutters? Birmingham Autumn Clearance Service covers how wet leaves turn to silt.
Fix the joint without fixing the cause and it will probably drip again.
What the Drip Does to the Roofline
A small drip repeated over seasons does real work:
- It soaks the fascia from behind, softening timber and loosening brackets.
- It stains and damages brickwork below.
- It keeps the area damp, which encourages algae and moss.
- It can eventually reach the interior.

What to Check From the Ground
Ten minutes on a dry day, from the garden, with no ladder:
- Look along each run for a section that sits lower than its neighbours.
- Look at each joint for staining, rust streaks or a dark line below it.
- Check for a vertical stain on the wall beneath.
- Look for plants or a green fringe at the joint.
- Check the fascia for peeling paint near the joint.
- Listen in light rain for a gurgle at the downpipe.
- Check upstairs for a musty smell near an outside wall.
The blocked gutters checklist covers more. A joint is hard to judge from below, because the problem often sits on the inside or the back.
Why Not Seal It Yourself From a Ladder?
Because the risk is real and the result is often poor. Working at height is where most DIY injuries happen. Can You Clean Your Own Gutters Safely? A Birmingham Ladder Safety Reality Check sets out the risks, and the HSE’s guidance on working at height says avoid it where you can. How Do You Clean Gutters on a Two-Storey House in Birmingham Safely? covers standard houses, and Gutter Cleaning for Bungalows Birmingham | Safe & Fast explains why a low roof isn’t automatically safe.
The second problem is the work itself. Sealant applied over silt, damp or a moving joint rarely holds, and painting or sealing before the gutter is cleared and dried tends to fail. So the sequence matters more than the product.
What a Visit Covers and What It Doesn’t
Our visit covers:
- Ground-level walk-round: Staining, sagging, growth and access.
- Extraction to the channel floor: Leaves and the silt beneath them.
- Camera inspection: Joints, brackets and fall angle on a live feed.
- Downpipe flow test: Every outlet.
- Fascia and soffit observation: Visible condition noted and photographed.
- Photos and a written summary: Before and after images of every run.
The camera is how a joint fault gets found and photographed. The method is described in How Do You Clean Gutters Without a Ladder? The Method Birmingham Pros Use and Gutter Vacuum Cleaning Birmingham. The full process is in What Happens During a Professional Gutter Clean? A Birmingham Homeowner’s Walkthrough. Heavily neglected runs fall under our gutter clearing service, and our fascia and soffit cleaning service covers the outside surfaces. Real examples are in our gallery.
What it doesn’t do: repair rotten timber or plaster, diagnose interior damp or assess structural movement. A carpenter, a damp specialist or a structural engineer does those.
Property Types
- Victorian and Edwardian homes: Have cast iron joints and original timber. See the Victorian property guide.
- Semi-detached houses: Share runs, so one side’s leaking joint can affect the other. See Gutter Cleaning for Semi-Detached Homes: The Shared Boundary Issue in Birmingham.
- Extensions and conservatories: Have flat roof drainage. See Flat Roof Gutters in Birmingham: The Maintenance Problem Most Guides Ignore and our conservatory roof cleaning service.
- Taller buildings: Hide joint faults at height. See High-Level Gutter Cleaning Birmingham | Fully Insured.
- Rental properties: Have tenants who rarely look up. See Gutter Cleaning for Landlords & Letting Agents Birmingham.

Some of the region sits on clay-influenced ground, where repeated discharge in one spot matters more. How Birmingham’s Clay Soil Affects Foundation Damage From Blocked Gutters explains this carefully. It is gradual, and any structural worry belongs with a qualified structural engineer. Records, Insurance and Selling
Dated before and after photos of a joint fault help if a claim is ever questioned, as Gutter Maintenance and Home Insurance: What Birmingham Homeowners Need to Know explains. How to Compare Contractors
Ask five questions:
- Do you clear to the channel floor and check the structure? See The One Question to Ask Before Hiring Any Gutter Cleaner in the West Midlands.
- Do you work from the ground?
- Are you fully insured, and can I see the certificate?
- Do I get before and after photos of every joint and run?
- Will you tell me what you can and can’t repair?
Be wary of anyone who offers to seal a joint without cleaning and checking the gutter first, and be cautious about unusually quick visits, as How Long Does a Professional Gutter Clean Take in Birmingham? explains. Don’t agree to work at the door. Age UK and Citizens Advice have plain guidance on doorstep callers.
